The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) in this position will play an integral role across our adult Medical Oncology and Hematology practice, caring for patients with early and advanced solid tumor and hematologic malignancies who require acute evaluation and management. The NP PA will address a broad range of needs, including symptom management, oncologic emergencies, and treatment-related adverse events such as immunotherapy-related toxicities.
This position is divided into four primary areas: three Acute Care Clinics (coverage for the Cancer Treatment Unit, REACH intervention rooms, outpatient acute care visits), and the Immunotherapy (ICI) Toxicity Clinic. Providers work closely with each patient's primary oncology and hematology teams to ensure timely, coordinated care across the continuum.
The Acute Cancer Care Clinic provides a critical role in decreasing emergency department visits by facilitating direct admissions and managing patients, when possible, in an outpatient setting with close follow up. In addition, this role helps support shortened hospital length of stays by providing important follow up care for hospitalized cancer patients. This role supports our remote management nursing teams for cancer patients with neutropenic fevers and respiratory illness. There are opportunities to help expand and innovate remote patient monitoring programs. This role provides triage support for acutely ill patients in the cancer treatment unit and for nursing managing patient calls. The REACH intervention space will be a new clinic space that allows for IV interventions on the oncology floor (fluids, electrolytes, etc.).
In the Cancer Infusion Therapy Center, the provider plays a key role in the assessment and management of patients receiving systemic cancer therapy. Responsibilities include responding to infusion reactions, evaluating acute cancer-related concerns that arise during treatment visits, coordinating urgent diagnostic workups and interventions, and collaborating closely with infusion nursing staff, pharmacists, and the primary oncology team to ensure safe, timely, and patient-centered care
The ICI toxicity clinic sees patients with toxicities that range from mild to emergent concerns. As part of the ICI toxicity clinic coverage, an individual will see patients in the outpatient setting to manage ICI toxicities. This can be a one-time visit or many weeks to months of follow-up, depending on the individual patient’s needs. Additionally, when covering the ICI toxicity clinic, an individual will cover the ICI service pager to provide collaborative support for outpatient and inpatient colleagues with questions regarding ICI toxicities. This is a growing practice, and we anticipate continued evolution of the role and responsibilities.
The individual(s) working in this position will rotate coverage of the Acute and ICI toxicity clinics. Pager coverage for ICI and Acute clinics will be held by different NP PAs working that day. The goal is to have 4 NP PAs working every day to cover these clinics.
This is an ideal role for an NP or PA to work autonomously, with collaborative support as needed. This role requires collaboration with the patient's primary cancer care team and a broad range of multidisciplinary partners, including Infectious Diseases, Gastroenterology, Interventional Radiology, Pulmonary Medicine, Palliative Care, Emergency Medicine, and other hospital-based services.
This is a fast-paced and dynamic practice that requires strong communication, critical thinking, adaptability, and time management skills. Successful candidates will have a solid foundation in internal medicine, a passion for oncology care, and an interest in continuous learning, quality improvement, and program development.
This is a rapidly evolving practice with continued growth in acute oncology and immunotherapy toxicity management. Current initiatives include the development of enhanced observation capabilities to support real-time interventions, improve patient access, and prevent escalation of care when possible. Providers in this role will have opportunities to partner with clinical and operational leadership to shape workflows, expand services, and advance patient-centered oncology care across Mayo Clinic's three shields.
