Most in-demand nursing specialties abroad (2026)

The most in demand nursing specialties for nurses moving abroad: ICU, emergency, theatres, mental health and more, from job ads and official shortage lists.

The most in-demand nursing specialties in job ads are emergency, critical care and ICU, medical-surgical, cardiac and theatres (operating room). On Nurse Jobs World on 16 October 2026, emergency nursing appeared in 4,532 live ads and critical care and ICU in 3,822, out of about 56,800. Official shortage lists point the same way, and add mental health, aged care and nurse practitioners.

This guide combines our own job data with official lists from the US, New Zealand and Canada, so you can see which specialties give you the most choice abroad and what each country is short of. Demand changes quickly, so treat these numbers as a snapshot, and check the official links. This is general information, not career or immigration advice.

Nursing specialties list: what the job ads ask for

We read every ad on this board and tag the specialties it names. An ad can name several. These are the counts on 16 October 2026, from the specialty filter on all nursing jobs:

Specialty Live job ads Share of all ads
Emergency 4,532 8%
Critical care and ICU 3,822 7%
Medical-surgical 3,746 7%
Cardiac 2,829 5%
Theatres and perioperative 2,053 4%
Oncology and cancer 1,820 3%
Outpatients and clinics 1,541 3%
Paediatrics 1,111 2%
Renal and dialysis 945 2%
Neonatal and NICU 818 1%
Palliative care 762 1%
Aged care and care homes 425 1%
Mental health 423 1%
Community and district 405 1%

Two things to keep in mind:

  • Most ads on the board are from the US, so these counts mostly reflect US hospital hiring. Our October 2026 report has the full breakdown.
  • Most ads name no specialty at all. Many general registered nurse jobs still want experience in one of these areas.

By role, 74% of the jobs in the report were for registered nurses, 10% for advanced practice nurses such as nurse practitioners, and 9% for practical or enrolled nurses.

What official sources say is in demand

United States

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects registered nurse jobs to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, faster than average, with about 180,800 openings a year (BLS). For advanced practice nursing, growth is much faster: 41% for nurse practitioners and 36% for nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives and nurse practitioners together. Their median pay was $134,920 in May 2025 (BLS).

Nurse practitioner roles usually need a US graduate-level qualification and certification, so they are a longer-term goal for most nurses trained abroad. On this board, many of the US ads that state visa sponsorship were for advanced practice roles.

New Zealand

Immigration New Zealand’s Green List names many registered nurse specialties, including aged care, child and family health, community health, critical care and emergency, developmental disability, disability and rehabilitation, medical, medical practice, mental health, paediatrics, perioperative and surgical, plus nurse practitioners and midwives (Green List).

The Nursing Council of New Zealand is more cautious. It says demand for internationally qualified nurses “is currently lower than previously, except in some particular areas of speciality or experience (e.g. mental health and addiction)” (NCNZ). Our guide to the New Zealand register covers the process.

Canada

Canada’s Express Entry system runs category-based draws, and healthcare and social services occupations is one of the current categories. Its eligible occupations include registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses (NOC 31301) and nurse practitioners (31302). You need at least 12 months of full-time work experience in the occupation within the past 3 years (IRCC). See how to become a nurse in Canada.

ICU nurse jobs abroad

Critical care and ICU is the second largest specialty on this board. ICU experience is useful abroad because:

  • It was one of the top two specialties in our October 2026 report.
  • New Zealand lists “Registered Nurse (Critical Care and Emergency)” on its Green List.
  • Some US international nurse programmes say they prefer ICU and emergency backgrounds. Cleveland Clinic’s “International RN” ad on this board, for example, lists ED, ICU, geriatric, med/surg and hospice as preferred.

Keep proof of your ICU experience: dates, unit type, number of beds, and any courses such as advanced life support. Regulators and employers will ask for it. Browse critical care and ICU jobs on the board.

Operating room nurse jobs abroad

Theatre or operating room (perioperative) nursing had 2,053 ads on this board on 16 October 2026. In the UK it is usually called theatre or scrub nursing; in the US, OR or perioperative nursing. New Zealand lists “Registered Nurse (Perioperative)” on its Green List, and several sponsoring employers on this board posted theatre roles, such as “Theatre Scrub Nurse” in London and anaesthetics nurse jobs in Australia. Browse theatres and perioperative jobs.

Mental health nursing

Mental health had fewer ads on this board (423), but it stands out in official sources. New Zealand’s nursing council names mental health and addiction as an exception to lower demand, and the Green List includes mental health nursing. In the UK, registered mental health nursing is its own field with its own NMC Test of Competence, covered in our NMC OSCE guide.

Aged care

Aged care had 425 tagged ads on this board, but many more care home ads use general titles such as “Registered Nurse”. In Australia, many of the employers stating visa sponsorship on this board in October 2026 were aged care providers, such as Bupa Australia and Estia Health. New Zealand lists “Registered Nurse (Aged Care)” on its Green List. See hospitals and agencies that sponsor international nurses.

Renal and dialysis nursing

Renal and dialysis nursing had 945 ads on this board on 16 October 2026. It is a niche worth knowing about, because two large US dialysis providers, Fresenius Medical Care and DaVita, posted registered nurse ads that mention visa sponsorship. One Fresenius ad asks for at least 2 years of nephrology nursing experience for its entry level. If you already work in a dialysis unit, look at renal and dialysis jobs and the employers sponsoring visas.

Paediatrics, neonatal and midwifery

Paediatrics (1,111 ads) and neonatal and NICU (818 ads) are smaller but steady specialties. New Zealand’s Green List names “Registered Nurse (Paediatrics)” and “Registered Nurse (Child and Family Health)”, and also midwives. In the UK, children’s nursing is a separate field with its own NMC Test of Competence (RN8), and midwives sit a midwifery version of the tests.

Midwifery is a separate profession in many countries, with its own regulator. In New Zealand, for example, midwives register with the Midwifery Council, not the Nursing Council. Browse midwife jobs on the board.

Oncology and cardiac nursing

Cardiac nursing (2,829 ads) and oncology (1,820 ads) are large hospital specialties, mostly in US ads on this board. Both often ask for specialty courses or certifications on top of registration, and US cancer centres may require a cancer-specific certification within a set time. Cleveland Clinic’s ad on this board, for example, says nurses in oncology settings must obtain a cancer-specific certification or show ongoing qualifying education.

How to choose a specialty for working abroad

  1. Build on what you already do. Two years in one specialty usually counts for more than short spells in several. Some international programmes ask for at least 2 years of acute care.
  2. Match the destination. Acute specialties (ICU, emergency, theatres) had the most ads on this board, most of them in the US. Aged care and mental health are in steady demand in Australia and New Zealand.
  3. Check what counts for registration. Regulators register you as a general nurse first. Advanced titles such as nurse practitioner usually need a separate application; in New Zealand, for example, it has its own NCNZ fee.
  4. Watch pay differences. Specialty pay varies by employer. See nurse salary by country and the best US states for nurses.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most in demand nursing specialties?

In job ads on this board in October 2026: emergency, critical care and ICU, medical-surgical, cardiac and theatres (perioperative). Official sources add nurse practitioners in the US (41% projected growth to 2035) and mental health and addiction in New Zealand.

Which nursing specialty is best for going abroad?

Acute care specialties such as ICU, emergency and theatres give the widest choice of jobs, especially in the US, where most of this board’s ads are. For Australia and New Zealand, aged care and mental health are worth considering. The best choice is usually the specialty where you already have at least 2 years of experience.

Which nursing specialties pay the most?

Advanced practice roles pay the most. In the US, nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives and nurse practitioners had a median of $134,920 in May 2025, against $97,550 for registered nurses. These roles need extra qualifications in the country where you work.

What nursing specialties are in demand in Canada?

Canada’s Express Entry healthcare category covers registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses and nurse practitioners. It does not name specialties within nursing. Check provincial programmes and the employer’s ad for specialty needs.
